A Message from ASCO President, Dr. John Flanagan

Welcome to a new semester, in a new year, filled with new hope and optimism. It may be the depth of winter but we can look forward to longer days, embrace the vaccine and together “find light in the never-ending shade.”1  We can look forward with optimism to life being more normal by this time next year and we can be assured by the hope of a “new dawn and a new day.”2

As you welcome back your communities take a moment to reflect on the journey of the last nine months. We have persevered in difficult circumstances. We have all felt despair at times but have encouraged colleagues and mentored learners, and at many times we have seen the very best of ourselves. One thing is for sure, we will never be the same moving forward, and we will never forget. I leave you with words of wisdom from the inspirational Amanda Gorman:

“We seek harm to none and harmony for all
Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true:
That even as we grieved, we grew
That even as we hurt, we hoped
That even as we tired, we tried”

“The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it
If only we’re brave enough to be it”
